I can’t sit still sometimes. I move the same way over and over again, like a character in a video game. What is this and how do I stop it?

“Akathisia” is the medical word that describes a person who has motor restlessness and as a result, there is a need to move about constantly. “Hyperactivity” is another word to describe someone who has a higher than normal level of activity.  It’s a good idea to make an appointment with your medical provider to find out what might be causing this behavior, particularly if is new. Be sure to tell your provider if you are taking any new medications including all prescription and other-the-counter medicines, herbs, marijuana or other nonprescription or recreational (illegal) drugs. Once your medical provider determines the cause, it will likely be possible to figure out the right treatment to lessen or stop your symptoms.
