I am developing a lot of stretch marks on my body. I am 220 pounds (I used to be 250). Is there anything I can do other than workout/lose weight? Are they permanent?

Stretch marks are actually a kind of scar that appears when the skin stretches quickly (with weight gain) or shrinks (with sudden weight loss). It’s common to develop stretch marks during puberty when your body is going through major growth spurts. Similar to other types of scars, stretch marks are permanent but they often fade a bit with time. Researchers have tested various home remedies such as almond oil, olive oil, cocoa butter and vitamin E and found that they did not make stretch marks go away or fade. However, there are prescription treatments that can make stretch marks appear less noticeable including products containing hyaluronic acid and tretinoin. There are also early studies using lasers on some forms of stretch marks, but these are typically expensive treatments not covered by insurance and carry their own risks. Keep in mind that there isn’t one treatment that works for everyone. Before you buy over-the-counter products that claim to heal stretch marks, we suggest that you make an appointment with a dermatologist (skin specialist) who can figure out what treatment is best for you.
