Thanks for your question. A few of the common things that can cause burning when you pee include:
- Local Irritation. This can include small cuts or abrasions on your penis or from irritation from different products (such as soaps, moisturizers, or lubricants). We recommend using gentle soaps and moisturizers; this can include ones marked for “sensitive” skin or ones that are fragrance free. If you are using lubricants try a different one, and see if that helps.
- Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). To check for a UTI a healthcare provider can order a urine test.
- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). To check for genital STI’s a healthcare provider can order a urine test, blood test, and/or get a swab of an ulcer/vesicle on the penis.
- Kidney Stones. These are often associated with a lot of pain and sometimes blood in your urine. They are not common in adolescents, unless there is a strong family history of kidney stones.
