Farting, or passing gas, is very common. Everyone passes gas throughout the day – all the air that you swallow has to come out as either burps or farts! The average person passes gas 10-20 times per day. You can do a few things that might help you pass gas a little less often: avoid swallowing too much air (the biggest offenders: chewing gum and drinking carbonated beverages) and avoid eating foods that make additional gas (commonly beans and just a few vegetables such as cabbage, onions, and potatoes).
