Thanks for your question. Many people wonder about erections, and their sometimes unwanted timing.
So what is an erection?
An erection is the medical term for when the penis fills with blood and stretches in shape and size. Basically this is when the penis may get wider, longer, and harder. It can last a couple of minutes or much longer.
Why do people assigned male at birth get erections?
Erections happen due to brain signals and changes in blood flow to your penis. They are often triggered by sexual stimulation, that can either be physical or thoughts (such as thinking about sex). They can also happen during nocturnal emissions (commonly called wet dreams). Also, may people will admit that at some point they have gotten an erection totally randomly and without a clear reason.
What can I do to stop an erection?
Think about something else. We recognize this can be tricky to do. However thinking about something other than your erection or something sexual can help decrease the signals to your brain. In turn this will help get rid of the erection.
If you’re in a public place you can try to discretely adjust your pants or use something to cover the area (such as your shirt, a bag you may be carrying, or a book).
If nothing else works, you can go to a bathroom.
Should I ever be concerned about an erection?
Usually erections are a normal part of sexual health. If your erection is painful or lasts more than 4 hours you should see a health care provider immediately.
